Dynamic Walking 2020

Woodloch Resort, Hawley, Pennsylvania, USA

May 14, 2020

(May 13th, 2020) Dynamic Walking Tomorrow

Registered participants should have received the full program. Talks will also be streamed publicly via YouTube here. See you tomorrow!

(May 5th, 2020) Update

Unless you have already heard otherwise from us, your submission (if you made one) has been accepted for virtual poster presentation. There have been some issues with the email system, thus the wider announcement here.

Important dates:

Registration deadline (required!): Monday, May 11th

Poster submission (required to present!): Tuesday, May 12th

Conference: Thursday, May 14th

  • Talks will be simultaneously streamed via Zoom and YouTube, but Zoom will allow for interaction during the day. The Zoom link will only be shared with registered attendees, where YouTube allows for overflow capacity.

  • A Slack channel will be used to communicate throughout the day. Specific channels will be created to organize discussions of talks and posters. A Slack invite will be sent to registered attendees, but you may also reach out via Twitter/email to request an early link for any poster troubleshooting (see below).

  • We want to recreate the Dynamic Walking atmosphere of free flowing discussions. To do this, we will be experimenting with the website http://spatial.chat for the poster sessions. This site allows natural conversations where you can “move” around the room, speaking only with other people near you. Poster presenters can upload images or YouTube videos to share in the room, as well as sharing their screen. You can test out the online system with this room that is open now: https://spatial.chat/s/dwtest

  • If you would like to withdraw your submission, and not have the abstract appear in a compiled document, please send an email to dynamicwalking2020@gmail.com by the registration deadline (Monday, May 11th).

  • Posters will be shared by two mechanisms:

  1. Submit files (PDF, PNG, or YouTube link) by email to dw20.tech@gmail.com by Tuesday, May 12th. Be sure to include author names and abstract title. These will be uploaded to the public website for everyone to view. This is the place for you to show your work in as much (or as a little) detail as you like.
  2. During your designated poster session, you can upload images (PNG, etc.) or YouTube links into the designated http://spatial.chat room. Multiple posters will share a room (to encourage natural browsing of posters), so please be courteous of your fellow presenters’ space. Given space limitations, if you wish to include an image of a poster in the room, that poster cannot be too large. 30 x 30 inches with reasonable font sizes should be readable, but you are encouraged to test it ahead of time (https://spatial.chat/s/dwtest). Note that each room needs to accommodate NINE posters.

Please contact dynamicwalking2020@gmail.com for programmatic issues, and dw20.tech@gmail.com for technical (login, file) issues.

(Mar 27th, 2020) Announcement: Due to COVID-19, we will be moving to a one-day virtual conference on May 14th.

Join us in Hawley, Pennsylvania (in the Poconos) for the 2020 edition of Dynamic Walking. The location is at the Woodloch Family Resort, about two hours from Newark International Airport. There is a large lodge for conference activities overlooking an inland lake. Comfortable, on-site lodging and meals will be included, and outdoor activities will be available as diversions from the scientific program.

Conference Information

Abstract submissions are due at midnight of Feb. 24th, 2020. All attendees are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract to present at the conference. Full instructions and submission form.

Registration will open in March. Family rates will be available for those traveling with significant others and/or children.

A limited number of travel grants will be available to help broaden participation in the meeting. Details on the travel grant application process are found with the abstract submission instructions.

Principles and Concepts of Legged Locomotion

Dynamic Walking 2020 is the 15th annual conference on principles and concepts of legged locomotion. This single-track conference brings together academics and industry designers working in robotics, biomechanics, rehabilitation and bionics from around the world.

The aim of this meeting is to provide insight into the fundamental principles that underlie legged locomotion. Topics central to dynamic walking include energetics, stability and control, predictive principles and models, dynamic modeling, empirical data in a conceptual framework, and robot successes and failures. Participants include both academics (students and professors) and industry designers with a mixture of researchers studying human and animal legged locomotion and those designing walking robots.

To promote open sharing of information, the meetings were organized to provide as much interaction between participants as possible. The format is highly informal and fluid, with a single track of presentations and extensive time scheduled for interaction, brainstorming, and idea sharing.
